SHAKA Spring/Summer 2020
Shaka girl is one who has the intelligence and emotional quotient as well as positive attitude, she is friendly, charming, remarkable, and interesting. Her impressive characteristic appears through her unique style of dressing, which is reflected in the clothing design in this collection.
"Jungle Memoir", the Spring/ Summer 2020 Collection, is inspired by the book GingerNutz written by Michael Robert, the story is about the life of Grace Coddington (Model/ Stylist/ Creative Director) from the beginning of her life until her dream came true, including her experience and point of view in her professional careers through the illustrations of an orangutan. Grace thinks that "Fashion world is fun, it is about making believe that someone found clothes and magical items in a dressing box then mixes and matches them together."
The story telling in GingerNutz by Michael Roberts is about Grace’s life during her crucial time by using an orangutan as her representative. The orangutan lives in the tropical forest, where there are plenty of trees, animals, and flowers, that reflect the color shade in this book to be bright and colorful, suitable for summer wear, especially the Clementine orange, the special color for this collection.
The design in this collection comes from the book by dividing timeline according to Grace’s lifespan: starting from the 1960, the time she began her career as a model and till she fulfilled her dream. Next in the 1970s, Grace became a stylist and was obsessed with fashion business more and more, then in the 1980s she changed to work, behind the scenes, for many fashion brands. The details of clothing in this collection are selected from outstanding design in each era, together with the viewpoint of the Stylist, which turn out to be a unique and contemporary style, for example the check pattern clothing from the 60s, bell-bottom pants, boot-cut trousers, and draping from the 70s, follow by the decorating draping details, on a lady suit silhouette, to make her look smarter in the 80s.
Moreover, in “Jungle Memoir” Spring/Summer 2020 Collection, the illustrator images in the book GingerNutz by Michael Roberts are used for pattern designs, both for printing on different fabrics, like Marbling with Art illustrator of an orangutan, many kinds of leaves motifs, and for flower pattern printed on mesh fabric, including the details of clothing, such as layering, draping, safari, as well as sportswear ideas mixed in this collection. All these designs are for Shakastyle girls to wear their clothes happily and to enjoy dressing up as if they are in a magic box according to what Grace said.
